How much should I tip at a restaurant?

The standard in the US is 15–20% for full-service dining. Use the 18% or 20% preset in this calculator. For a $60 bill, 20% tip = $12, making the total $72. Tip less (10–15%) for counter service or below-average service, more (25%+) for exceptional service.

What if people ordered different amounts — how do I split fairly?

This calculator splits the total evenly, which works when everyone pays the same share. For unequal splits, calculate each person's item total separately, apply the tip percentage to their subtotal, and sum those. A 20% tip is easy to calculate mentally: move the decimal one place left and double it.

How much should I tip for food delivery?

The standard for delivery is 10–15% of the order subtotal, with a minimum of $3–5 for small orders. For large or complex orders, tip 15–20%. Enter your delivery order subtotal and select 15% in this calculator to get a quick recommendation.

How do I calculate a 20% tip in my head?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10% of the bill, then double it for 20%. Example: $47.50 bill → 10% = $4.75 → 20% = $9.50. For 15%, find 10% and add half: $4.75 + $2.38 = $7.13. This calculator does it instantly for any percentage.

Do I need to tip when traveling internationally?

Tipping customs vary significantly by country. In Japan and many East Asian countries, tipping is not expected and can be considered rude. In Europe, rounding up or leaving 5–10% is common. In the US and Canada, 15–20% is standard. Use the Custom field in this calculator to input the local convention percentage.

常见问题

常见问题

What is a standard tip percentage?v
In the United States, 15–20% is considered standard for sit-down restaurant service. 18% is commonly pre-filled on card terminals. 25% is a generous tip for excellent service. For counter service, 10% or rounding up is typical.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?v
Convention varies, but most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator uses whatever number you enter as the bill, so enter just the food and drink subtotal (before tax) for a pre-tax tip, or the full bill including tax for a post-tax tip.
Can I use a custom tip percentage?v
Yes. Click or tap the Custom field and type any percentage. The preset buttons deactivate and the calculation uses your custom value. Type 0 for no tip or any value from 1 to 100.
How is the per-person amount calculated?v
The total (bill + tip) is divided equally by the number of people. Each person's breakdown shows their bill share and tip share separately so everyone can see the math clearly.
